My Backyard

I was meeting up with childhood friends in the town where I grew up
It’d been years since I’d been there, and I found I parked my truck
Right outside my old house, didn’t know 'til I was there
Rolled down the windows and breathed that honeysuckle air
I looked at the backyard and the memories there
It was a baseball field and a battleground and a place to count the stars
Have a catch with Dad - run through the grass - chase fireflies in the dark
It was everything - both near and far
It was the whole world - in my backyard
Caught myself grinning, thinking ‘bout the day
My friends and I decided that we would try to make
A real baseball field with dirt paths to each base
We dug up that yard until my dad got home
The look on his face could’ve melted stone (‘til he joined in)
It was a baseball field and a battleground and a place to count the stars
Catch hell from Dad - run through the grass - chase fireflies in the dark
It was everything - both near and far
It was the whole world - in my backyard
My first kiss and my first fight - the first time I snuck a beer
The first time that I felt God in a sunset I was standing there
I took the first small steps from a boy into a man
Right there in that yard I began to understand
That I was one small part of a larger plan
A car pulled in the driveway - a dad and his son
The boy jumped out and said, “Hey Dad, to you have the time to throw me some”
And as they disappeared behind the fence
I thought what I would give for one more chance
To be back in that yard for one more catch
It was a baseball field and a battleground and a place to count the stars
Have a catch with Dad - run through the grass - chase fireflies in the dark
It was everything - both near and far
It was the whole world - in my backyard

I remember that day like it was yesterday
That look on your face to be in this brand new place
But still at home
You never were alone
Savannah - Savannah
Your smile makes us smile
We’ll love you for all time
This year has passed by in that clichéd blink of an eye
But whenever I see your face I’m right back to that day
When you came home
You’ll never be alone
Savannah - Savannah
Your smile makes us smile
We’ll love you for all time
Everybody tells us
The days will go by so fast
So let’s slow down
And enjoy this one
I don’t know what the future holds
Or how your life will unfold
But I know this to be true
The world’s a better place because of you
Our lives are so much better because of you
Savannah - Savannah
Your smile makes us smile
We’ll love you for all time

Nine and nine is eighteen and one and one makes two
And who could imagine anyone just like you
Could be so precious in every single way
Olivia Frances today is your day
From the beginning you’ve been on the move
Rambling on and finding your own groove
But we still love to hold you long enough to say
Olivia Frances today is your day
Olivia Frances we’re so in love with you
Olivia Frances and everything you do
Olivia Frances we’re so in love with you
The smiles you give us brighten our whole world
We can’t wait to see how you’ll change the world
But one thing to know no matter where you go
Our love will be there (just so you know)
Olivia Frances we’re so in love with you
Olivia Frances and everything you do
Olivia Frances we’re so in love with you
Our little fall baby is one today
And we’re still falling for you each day
Before we know it you’ll be singing it too
Olivia Frances this one’s for you
Olivia Frances we’re so in love with you
Olivia Frances and everything you do
Olivia Frances we’re so in love with you

Sometimes it’s the little things
That mean everything
That mean more
Reaching up for a hand to hold
To know you’re not alone
That you mean more
A quiet voice just to say
A little help goes a long way
So Alice can you lend your hand
And Alice can you lend your ear
Cause we’ve got a story to tell
And Alice you’re there to hear
To get a little help and a lift
Is to be one of Alice’s Kids
A winter coat where there once was none
The school trip for fun
A pair of shoes
New glasses for those broken frames
Cleats for the game
STEM camp dues
A quiet voice just to say
A little help goes a long way
So Alice can you lend your hand
And Alice can you lend your ear
Cause we’ve got a story to tell
And Alice you’re there to hear
To get that little help and a lift
Is to be one of Alice’s Kids
A little help goes a long way
A little help goes a long way

It Goes On

My grandfather worked as a painter
He earned the union wage
And he carried his work in an iron handshake
That never weakened with age
He married a good-hearted woman
And he loved her in his quiet way
They raised two kids on the South Side
In church where they sang and they prayed
His son grew into my father
From both of these men I have learned
That to be a good man, it helps to be good
And to be strong you need to show love
And that life - goes by
But that love - does not die
It goes on
My mother's father my grandpa
Served in the Second World War
Sometimes he would tell a story or two
But he rarely ever told more
Scars ran the course of his body
Like a tree's many rings showed his age
And his eyes showed his love for my sister and me
Speaking words he no longer could say
As I knelt by his bedside
And said my final goodbye
I saw a man who had loved and had lost
And I think that he finally knew why
That life - goes by
But that love - does not die
It goes on - and on - and on and on
It goes on
How many men know the reason
For the suffering and joys they face
For the loss and the love and hopes and the fears
Of life's bittersweet embrace
I'm not claiming to know
And I wonder how some people do
But I do have faith that there's good hands that hold
A I believe that it's true
That life - goes by
But that love - does not die
It goes on
